Sailing Classes

As with other sports, in sailing many basic concepts must be learned that will allow any person to enjoy water navigation in a safe way. In addition, sailing is as much an individual activity as it is a group one. Therefore, it becomes important that the concepts, rules and safety of sailing are understood, and this can be achieved through classes and training.


Classes are divided into groups by age: Children (ages 7-13) and adults (ages 14 and older)

Classes are given Saturdays and Sundays at club Salvadoreno, el Corinto, in Lake Ilopango, starting at 10:30 am.

For Adults

Two Options exist:
  1. The First is 4 classes, each two hours long.
  2. The second is 2 classes, each 4 hours long.
For coordinating purposes, it is necessary to get in touch with the instructor to arrange the days and hours.

The cost for 8 hours of classes for adults is US $40.00.

For Children (ages 8-13)
The only option that currently exists is 4 classes, each 2 hours long.

The cost for 8 hours of classes for children is US $30.00


Class Program (para adultos)

  • The first class is on land. Discussed is sailing theory and terminology, sailing safety and three basic sailing knots necessary for rigging and driving a boat. Don't forget to bring pencil and paper. You will also be introduced to the Laser, the boat you will use to sail, and learn to rig it. If time and wind permits, a short trip may be made around the lake in a J24, a larger boat.
  • In the second class, you will begin to apply what was learned in the previous class, for you will rig and take out a Laser. In the water, the focus is on tacking, gybes, and capsizing. you will also learn how to properly take out and bring in a boat. You will get wet.
  • The third class involves a review of vocabulary and basic knots. One major focus on the water will be on the orientation of the sail in relation to the wind's direction. Another focus will be on handling emergency situations, and stopping. The international sailing rules will be gone over and practiced on the water.
  • The fourth class consists of a test: sailing vocabulary and rules, rigging a boat, making the 3 basic knots, and completing a course on the water.

If the climate is good but you miss the class without 24 hours notice, you will be able to reschedule for another day. However, if you miss the class a second time without giving 24 hours notice, you must pay $10 for that missed class.
